Answers to the most common questions about lessons, logistics, and mahjong.
◆ Getting Started
Not at all! Lessons are designed to welcome complete beginners. You'll learn the tiles, the rules, and the rhythm of the game from scratch — no prior knowledge needed. If you've played before, there are sessions for intermediate and experienced players too.
Marissa teaches American mahjong using the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card. This is the most popular style played in the United States, particularly in New York. The card changes every year, and current card play is always incorporated into lessons.
Just yourself and an open mind! All tiles, racks, and cards are provided. If you already own a current NMJL card, feel free to bring it — but it's not required. You may want to bring a notebook if you like to take notes.
◆ Lessons & Format
Each group lesson runs approximately 2 hours. This gives enough time for instruction, Q&A, and actual gameplay — which is the best way to learn and retain the rules.
Group lessons typically have 4–8 players. Mahjong is a 4-player game, so groups are structured so everyone gets plenty of table time. Larger groups rotate and observe, which is also a valuable part of learning.
Most beginners feel comfortable playing a full game after 3 lessons. That said, mahjong has a lot of depth — many students continue coming back to sharpen their strategy, learn more hand combinations, and simply enjoy the game with others.
◆ Location & Logistics
Marissa comes to you! Lessons take place at a location of your choosing — your home, apartment, office, or any space that fits your group comfortably. She brings all the tiles, racks, and cards, so all you need to do is pick a spot and gather your people.
Yes! Corporate events are one of our favorite things to do. Mahjong makes for an incredibly fun and memorable team experience — it's social, strategic, and something most people have never tried together before. Whether it's a team-building afternoon, a company offsite, or a holiday party, Marissa will bring everything and lead the group through a session everyone will be talking about. Reach out via the contact page to discuss your event.
At the moment, in-person lessons are based in Brooklyn and Manhattan. For special events or larger groups outside the city, reach out and we can discuss what's possible.
